Irish Comic Noodlers

Just a quick gathering of images done with pencil base and digital colour finish from the ICN Noodle on Tuesdays. It's nice to gather some of them together to see what was done and how it works. It's good to see how certain effects worked really well or fell short in other applications. Interesting. Hope you like too! :)

Pencils

Noodle for ICN due up tomorrow, and wanted to post up the pencils but then found I hadn't saved the friggin original. The finished piece is grand enough, with plenty of layers and effects, but it amazes me how the pencils can get lost in the noise and layers. I'm still learning a lot, and what is really becoming clear is that I throw a lot of pencils, sketches and effects together and that isn't necessarily a good idea. It can and has left some of the work hangin or looking not as sharp or clean. The pencils looked light and had good shading but scanned they were rough as hell, and without inking it fell short. Inking it would have interfered with the light colouring I was intending to do...which is not how it evolved but the intention was there! Anyways, might go back and redo it with inking and a proper clean finish just as a comparison for myself. It does look like I got heavy handed in my approach with layering and colours. Might be a good time to learn from that and move on. Next time I might just lightly wash over it or something.
I've attached one of the wallpapers I made for layering, which I liked. It got printed, redrawn and noodled with a lot after this.

Ninja Jump

Had a photo my brother took of me jumping in the snow on the beach ages back, so I messed about with it on Corel and copied it a few times. Went for a 'ninja power ranger charge' look, only my ninja look includes a brolly. It was heavy snow so a brolly was handy, and I don't know that ninjas would really need it. Most likely not.

Romantic Mayhem Launch Night!

The latest project completed is a collaborative effort for a banner 'National Tragedy' called Romantic Mayhem. A great idea thrown into being by Gar Shanley, and through persistence and help it's managed to reach the finish line.
This coming Saturday will be the launch party for it, all welcome, being held upstairs in Anseo in Lower Camden Street. Hope to catch you there for it!

Alice in Zombieland

Never drink the bottle that says 'drink me!'...you could turn into a zombie. This is a posting for the collectivethinkingblog.blogspot.com and I thought I'd test myself on using corel from start to finish. Normally it's sketch on paper, tidy it up and then scan it in and tweak it in corel. This time round it was sketch, tweak, layer, more layers and then finish. It could be more developed but I got stuck with it so finished it off as best as possible. It's a good experiment though so I'll be trying it out again until I get a proper handle on it.
I've had some postings over on ICN which I can now post here, so will throw up a few in the next week or so as a way to get this blog moving again.

Creator Owned Day! 1st March!

Busy day today for comics as there is a great little buzz going around about the Creator Owned Day. If you're unfamiliar with it then please do visit
and find out all about how the idea got going.
I've posted up on www.superhilbo.blogspot.com because that is what I created and I'm very proud of little 'ol Superhilbo. More stories are underway but like everything else, it takes time. :)
Above is a sample mock up promo poster I was doing at the end of last year, for a great band called The Sleep Thieves. It was going in a Ghostworld direction, but it kinda fell short a little, but I like the first panel a lot. Fun to do. :)

Test

Testing some bits out and seeing what works. I like the text and want to merge it with a more natural looking font. Might add some more variation to the background.
